It is important to balance the ease of sharing data and using AI automation with the potential negative consequences of oversharing or adverse automations.

In terms of technology, executives should design AI systems to automatically detect fake data and unethical behavior. This may involve vetting suppliers and partners for the malicious use of AI, and investing in defensive measures rooted in open, transparent, and trusted AI infrastructure. This could involve the adoption of trust fabrics that provide a system-level approach to automating privacy assurance, ensuring data confidence, and detecting unethical use of AI.

 

Instances of AI codes of ethics

An AI code of ethics can establish principles and motivate appropriate behavior in the use of artificial intelligence (AI). For example, Sudhir Jha, senior vice president and head of the Brighterion unit at Mastercard, is working on the following tenets to develop the company's AI code of ethics:

1- Inclusivity: An ethical AI system should be unbiased and work equally well for all members of society. This requires ensuring that the data sets used to train the AI models are diverse and representative, and that the trained models are carefully audited to filter out any problematic attributes. The models should also be closely monitored to ensure that they do not become corrupted.

2- Explainability: An explainable AI system supports the governance needed to ensure ethical use of AI. It is important to be able to understand the actions of an AI system in order to have confidence in it. This may involve making a small compromise in model performance in order to choose an algorithm that can be explained.

3- Positive purpose: An AI system should aim to achieve a positive purpose, such as reducing fraud, eliminating waste, rewarding people, or slowing climate change. It is important to consider ways to safeguard AI from being used for harmful purposes, as the risks of misusing this technology are significant.

4- Responsible data use: An AI system that uses data responsibly respects data privacy rights and observes best practices for data collection, management, and use. This includes only collecting data when it is needed and not continuously, and deleting data that is no longer required. It also involves being mindful of the granularity of data collected, and only collecting the minimum amount of data needed for a particular task.

 

The future of ethical AI

Some experts argue that an AI code of ethics can become outdated quickly and that a more proactive approach is needed to adapt to the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI). Arijit Sengupta, founder and CEO of Aible, an AI development platform, believes that a reactive approach to addressing bias in AI can be ineffective, as it may not address biases that are embedded in the data. Instead, Sengupta argues that the future of ethical AI should focus on defining fairness and societal norms, and on providing guiding principles rather than specific rules to avoid.

Jason Shepherd, vice president of ecosystem at Zededa, agrees that it is important for humans to develop rules and technologies that promote responsible AI, such as programming products and offers that protect human interests and are not biased against certain groups. In the long term, it will also be necessary to plan for the unethical use of AI by bad actors, including the potential emergence of more sentient AIs that could automate their own unethical behavior at a scale that humans would not be able to keep up with.

 

Overall, the ethical development and use of AI is critical for ensuring that it is a positive force for good in society, and for building trust and confidence in the technology.
